What is the world made of, and what does that leave of us?
Every philosophy is downstream of a guess about physics. Tell me what you think the universe is built out of — water, atoms, number, fire, mind, will, God, quantum amplitude — and I can predict most of what you'll say about knowledge, ethics, death and freedom. This atlas plots the guesses. Scroll down and time runs forward; move left to right and the world gets less material and more divine. Each era opens with the physics of its age, because the physics is the pressure that bends everything else. It ends where the argument has actually landed: on whether anybody chooses anything.

Ten answers to “could you have done otherwise?”
The free will debate is three questions wearing a trench coat. One: is every event fixed by earlier events plus the laws? Two: if it is, would that destroy free will? Three: do we have it? Answer those in different orders and you get every position below. Physics keeps changing the first answer and, annoyingly, keeps failing to settle the other two.
Where do you actually land?

What physics actually contributes
Laplace's demon (1814). Given every position and momentum, the future is already written. Classical mechanics made determinism a scientific claim rather than a theological one — and made hard determinism respectable for a century.
Quantum indeterminism (1926). The demon died, but randomness is not control. A decision caused by a random event is not more yours than one caused by a fixed one. This is the pivot of hard incompatibilism.
The block universe (1905–1915). Relativity of simultaneity means your future is already "there" in someone else's now. Eternalism doesn't require determinism, but it makes an open future hard to picture.
Chaos is not freedom. Sensitive dependence on initial conditions makes systems unpredictable, not undetermined. A chaotic brain is still a clockwork brain, just an unforecastable one.
Bell's theorem (1964). Local hidden variables are dead. One escape hatch — superdeterminism — buys locality by denying that experimenters could have chosen otherwise, which is free will denial as a physics posture.
Conway–Kochen (2006). If experimenters have a sliver of freedom in choosing measurements, so do the particles. A cheeky theorem: our freedom and nature's indeterminacy stand or fall together.
Libet (1983) and after. Readiness potentials appear before reported intention. Schurger's later work suggests the signal is drifting noise crossing a threshold, not a decision made backstage. Weaker evidence than the headlines claimed.
Emergence and downward causation. If macro-level patterns have real causal purchase, "you decided" can be true at one level while "particles obeyed" is true at another. Dennett's and Carroll's move — freedom as a real higher-level description.
Many-worlds (1957). Everett's branching makes the multiverse deterministic while each observer sees chance. Every choice happens somewhere, which is either a rescue of possibility or a mockery of it.
Thermodynamic agency. Living things are entropy-exporting systems that model their futures. Some argue that's all "could have done otherwise" ever needed to mean.
